Sunday Funday Collect and Cash inhttp://www.stmartinscarina.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Sunday-Funday-Collect-and-Cash-in.aspxSunday Funday Collect and Cash in
Did you know you can help raise money for our school library make-over just by collecting your plastic and glass bottles for recycling? It’s as easy as putting your recyclable containers in a box and dropping them off at the Cleanaway Morningside recycling depot!!

Cleanaway has teamed up with St Martin’s to establish a Sunday Funday account with all funds raised going towards the school library refurbishment. Every eligible container is worth 10c – so ask your friends and family to set aside their recyclables, ask the neighbours, ask everyone you know and start filling a box!

You should receive two tags and a brochure explaining the program in your child’s satchel this week. The tags display the Sunday Funday account number and need to be attached to your collection box before dropping off at the Morningside depot. An electronic version of the tags is attached to this email for printing if you require more.

Eligible containers include most glass, plastic, aluminium, steel and paper-based cartons between 150mL and 3L – such as soft drink cans and plastic bottles, as well as beer bottles and other glass containers. Non-eligible containers include milk bottles, wine bottles and spirit bottles. Let’s all do our part for the environment and our school!

Year 1 Sponsored Masshttp://www.stmartinscarina.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Year-1-Sponsored-Mass.aspxYear 1 Sponsored Mass
Thank you so much to all our Year 1 students and their families for coming along to mass on Sunday and for helping with the ministries during the mass. Thank you also to the members of staff who were there and helped out with the children and a special thanks to Mrs Power and the students who joined her for the choir. It was a lovely mass and we especially enjoyed listening to the Year 1 students sing 'These Hands'.

Our next School Sponsored Mass will be on Sunday March 31st at 9amand it will be our Prep classes who will be invited to join us and participate. There will also be a morning tea after mass. Of course, all school families, regardless of which year level your child/ren are in, are always invited to come along to these masses.

Project Compassion 2019http://www.stmartinscarina.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Project-Compassion-2019.aspxProject Compassion 2019
Today we began our Project Compassion campaign which will run for the remainder of this term. The theme this year is Give Lent 100%. Each week we will have a specific focus day where the children will be asked to bring along a gold coin or a little more, and donate it to Project Compassion. This week our special focus day was today where children were asked to wear a purple accessory and donate money to their class box. I am very pleased to say that our fundraising efforts today have been amazing, with the total raised being $840. For every $5 raised, the students from the Yr 6 Spirit Committee will be placing one of these stickers on a large 100% sign which they have made. Our aim is to fill the sign by the end of term. Let's keep up the great work and encourage the children to raise money for those less fortunate than us.

Next Week's focus day will be Friday, where the whole school will gather for a mini walk-athon next Friday afternoon. The children will gather their money in house colours with the team bringing in the most money gaining some extra points toward the Cross Country points. The children will be allowed to wear their house colour shirt on this day.

Remember the children are invited to bring in any coins/donations on any day and put it in the box in their classroom.

Ash Wednesday - Beginning of Lenthttp://www.stmartinscarina.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Ash-Wednesday---Beginning-of-Lent.aspxAsh Wednesday - Beginning of Lent
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. This season of preparation and reflection begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians get ready for Easter by observing a period of moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to reflect on the humanity of Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us all. On Ash Wednesday, the students will receive ashes on their forehead. The ashes historically signify repentance and remind us that we are of the earth and not perfect, but also that we belong to a global Catholic community united by the story of one man, Jesus. You may like to have a conversation with your child/ren to help them prepare for this special day. The following may help you explain what Lent is about:

During Lent, Christians are asked to do three things. The words for these are Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.

Prayer means to PRAY

Fasting means to GIVE UP and this can be that we give up a sometimes food or we give up being mean or telling lies.

Almsgiving is a very old word that means to give to others. So we will remember this with GIVE TO.

I encourage you to take time to reflect upon what it is that you are going to do differently in preparation for Easter. The teachers will be preparing the students in class for Ash Wednesday so that they know why they are receiving the ashes.

On Ash Wednesday the students are invited to wear a purple accessory and bring along a gold coin donation for our Project Compassion Appeal. Thanks for your support.
